In recent times we often hear about single-use plastics, unrecycled plastics and how bad they are for our environment. Less often we hear about the chemicals that these plastics contain. Many of these chemicals have important functional roles in the plastics, for example, to make them more pliable and durable. However, many of these chemicals also interfere with the endocrine (hormonal) systems in humans and animals when they leach from packaging into liquids, food and the environment. In a joint report by IPEN and the Endocrine Society, entitled “Plastics, EDCs & Health: A Guide for Public Interest Organizations and Policymakers on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals & Plastics,” the report focusses on these chemicals, what they are, where they occur and their effects to organisms.
